FOOD FOR THOUGHT LUNCHTIME LECTURE AT THE ARCHIVES

TRAVELING WITH WILLIAM BARTRAM AND FRIENDS

Montgomery, AL (11/12/2023) – The Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) will begin its 2023 Food For Thought lunchtime lecture series on Thursday, January 19, at 12:00 PM. Dr. Kathryn Braund will present Traveling With William Bartram and Friends. The program will be held at the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) in Montgomery. It will also be livestreamed through the ADAH’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. Admission is FREE.
Dr. Braund, an expert on eighteenth-century naturalist William Bartram’s observations of the southeastern Indians, was puzzled by Bartram’s descriptions of alligators he encountered during his tour of the South in the 1770s. This curiosity sparked an in-depth research project resulting in an essay included in The Attention of a Traveller: Essays on William Bartram's Travels and Legacy (University of Alabama Press), a 2022 publication edited by Braund. During this presentation, she will discuss Bartram’s writings on alligators and provide an overview of other research by fellow scholars found in the book.
Prior to her retirement in 2020, Dr. Braund was the Hollifield Professor of Southern History at Auburn University. She holds a M.A. from Auburn and a Ph.D. from Florida State University. Braund has authored, co-authored, and edited numerous books on southeastern Indians, the Federal Road, and William Bartram.
