Unfolding Alabama: Our History in Maps

January – December 2019
Milo B. Howard Auditorium and First Floor Corridor

The maps on display in this temporary exhibit illustrate how geography guides history. They depict forces that shaped the boundaries of the state and aided the growth of its industries and transportation infrastructure. They also illustrate the state’s rich cultural resources, the growth of its communities, and how Alabamians addressed critical social problems. Each of these maps convey a small part of what it means to call Alabama home.

The Alabama Department of Archives and History’s map collection is one of the largest in the region. Over 1,000 pieces from the collection are readily available online in the Archives' digital collections.
